Scarface (1983) is a remake of Scarface (1932). These movie's demonstrate both the similarities and differences on how gangster's protect their sister. Tony shows no remorse in his decisions throughout this film. The film showed how gangsters portray negative images in the film. The film shows Tony security towards his younger sister and his unhealthy affection for her. My research suggest in both Scarface (1932) and Scarface (1983), the main character displays amorous feelings toward his sister.

Scarface 1932 Vs. Scarface 1983

Scarface 1932: The main character name is Tony Camonte. Tony Camonte is portrayed as an immigrant from Italy. The person who plays as Tony Camonte name is Paul Muni and he is a Jew. Tony Camonte sister name is Francesca also known as Ceska. Tony Camonte side kick name is Guino. The movie Scarface originated during the prohibition era, during this era alcohol was banned. The movie depicted a negative image because Tony sold illegal beer.

Scarface 1983: In Scarface (1983) The main character is Tony Montana. Tony Montana is portrayed as an immigrant from Cuba. The person who plays Tony Montana name is Al Pacino and he is an Italian. Tony Montana sister name is Gina. Tony Montana side kick name is Manny. The movie showed a negative image because Tony sold Cocaine which is illegal.

Scarface 1932: Censorship Issues

Gangster movies were popular during the 1930's but the content of gangster films worried American censors. Gangster movies created a movement. American censors where worried that gangster films implied bad behavior. American censors thought that people would start acting like the gangster's in the movie. “The public discourse on criminality in film bespoke concerns with the legitimacy of violence and finally social order. Popular cinema was the primary national venue through which these concerns were expressed and debated at a transformative moment when sound technology was introduced, a variety of genres were honed, and Hollywood resituated itself in Depression-era America.” (Slocum, J. D. (2000).

In Scarface (1932) there was an delay to its opening. According to Catholic University of America "Scarface had censorship issues because Scarface was a "pre-Code" picture, made before the enforcement of rigid standards in the depiction of violence, sexuality, and morality in Hollywood movies (Faculty of Catholic University 2015, February 14)". People protested against the movie Scarface (1932) because they felt like the movie had a negative impact on society. The delay came about because the producers wanted to please American Censors. “The delay came about because, in an effort to appease the American censors, a subtitle "Shame of the Nation" was added to Scarface, along with a scene in which civic reformers preach ("You can end it. Fight!") directly to camera”(Springhall 1998).They added this scene in the movie about good people discussing controlling the gangster. Good people do not want gangsters in their society. “New York and Chicago censorship boards rejected Scarface outright until Warner’s agreed to make these changes but Jason Joy, who enforced the Hays Code, still had to convince them to show it cut. Each state in America had its own board of censors, so the original ending could still be seen in some theatres when the film was finally released in the spring of 1932. Howard Huges, the producer of the Scarface film, censorship issues was unsuccessful but the movie was still played in areas where there were less ridged censorship issues. Also the movie was delayed because the film was inappropriate and showed scenes where people questioned the relationship between brother and sister. “A particular target of censorship pressures was the depiction of independent or sexually-expressive women. Poppy is a kept woman who moves from one mobster to another. Both she and Cesca reflect elements of the "flapper" type that developed in the 1920's: the young woman out for a good time rather than marriage and a family” (Faculty of Catholic University 2015).

Scarface 1983 movie is based on an illegal immigrant from Cuba.

Tony is one of the many Cubans on the Mariel Boatlift to Miami. When he gets there, he is questioned by U.S. officials. There were prisoners in Cuba that were taken to a prison in Miami. The Cubans were held in the prison because they were look at as immigrants. Tony and his sidekick Manny are sent to "Freedomtown," a refugee camp that holds Cuban immigrants without green cards. After one month in the camp, Frank Lopez, head of a Miami drug cartel, offers to obtain them green cards in return for murdering Emilio Rebenga. Tony kills Rebenga by stabbing him. Tony and Manny are granted green cards and released, and the two get jobs as dishwashers for a small food stand in Little Havana. Little Havana is in Miami, Florida, United States. Months later Tony is connected back with his sister and mom. Tony mother warns Gina to stay away from Tony because she knows that he is a bad person. Tony wants to make an effort to be in Gina's life regardless. As Tony and Manny leave Tony’s mother house Manny tells Tony that Gina is beautiful and Tony warns him to stay away from her. Tony is very over protective when it comes to his sister.

The sidekick denies Tony's Sister

“Before Guino comes together with Ceska, she hits on him at a dance hall. She goes into a jazz age tap dance that, I’m sure, was hip at the film’s release. When she halts to ask Guino, “Wanna dance with me?” he firmly replies, “No,” (Sorrento 2012). In the 1983 film Tony and Manny find Gina dancing with some guy in the club and Tony beats him up. Tony shows that he is jealous because he gets so angry that he uses violence.  Manny takes Gina home and on the way home he tries to give her advice on dating and she says "someone like you" and he respond with No. In both films the side kick denies the sister.

Main Point: Scarface (1932) and Scarface (1983) Tony incestuous feelings spirals out of control when when he kills his side kick for being with his sister.

One interpretation: “Returning from hiding out, Camonte is told by his mother that his all-too-beloved sister, Cesca (Ann Dvorak), is living with a man. As the jealous Camonte stalks down the apartment hall, bent on vengeance, he whistles his fateful tune. When the door opens, he spies Guino with Cesca and shoots him before Cesca can tell him she and Guino had just been married” (Roulston 1998).
Another Interpretation:  In the 1932 film" Later, when Tony’s sideman, Guino, is visited by the former’s sister, Guino has cut out a row of paper dolls. The sister, Ceska, uses the dolls to come on to Guino, which he resists to show allegiance to Tony. When she notes that her brother will be away for a month, the scene ends to begin her and Guino’s marriage. Ironically recalling the scaffolding, the row of dolls signifies Guino’s choice to marry and build a family, an institution absent from the self-serving criminals and cops of the film. The row of dolls are, in fact, paper thin, since Tony, with incestuous leanings toward his sister, kills his buddy after learning of their involvement (he tragically didn’t realizes they were married)” (Sorrento 2012).
Francesca calls the police because Tony kills Guino. But Ceska ends up helping Tony shoot the police off “Scarface includes suggestions of incest in the bizarrely close relationship of Tony Camonte and his sister Cesca. “You’re me and I'm you. It's always been that way (Faculty of Catholic University (2015, February 14)”. In the 1983 film after Tony's is done hiding out Tony is looking for Gina he stops by his mom house to see if she is there and she is not. He finds Gina and Manny at his house. Gina is in a robe and Manny walks down the steps, Tony shoots Manny. Gina reveals she was going to tell him that they just got married.

Tony shows how he is very jealous and overprotective when it comes to his sister. Tony shows no remorse when he shoots the sidekick. He does not want any man with his sister because he loves her too much. This shows how Tony and his sister relationship appears to be incestuous.

Conclusion:

·    In both Scarface's Tony is crazy about their sister. They are overprotective when it comes to their sister even to the extent that they seem jealous when she comes in contact with any man.  Tony gets a rage of anger. Both of the Tony's are mean and crazy. They both think the world is theirs. They both want things to go their way by doing whatever they want. Tony felt like he was getting his way when he killed his sidekick. They both sold items that were illegal. They both have a bad relationship with their mom “she condemns Tony and warns Cesca that he "he hurts everybody" and "Tony no love you . . . he's gonna make you bad like him." (Faculty of Catholic University (2015, February 14)”. Tony mom was right. In the 1932 film After Tony shots Guino Ceska helps Tony fight off the police but she is killed by a stray bullet. This is an incestuous indication because she helps him even though he just kilt her lover. Tony eventually gets caught by the police. In the 1983 film After Tony shoots Manny Gina gets a gun and shots at tony while saying “you want me tony, come get me then”. This is an indication that Gina feels as though Tony likes her and wants to be in a sexual relationship with her because he gets jealous seeing her with a man and he always react in anger as if he was jealous. Gina dies because she gets shot.  Tony shows sympathy by shotting up everybody until he eventually gets shot and dies. In both films the only person Tony connects with is Gina he wants to keep her pure. Tony sister reminds him of himself and he wants to protect her by having her too himself and out of men reach.
